Not every adult tooth makes it through your entire adulthood. Many teeth get lost along the way due to illness or injury. If you are missing one tooth or several teeth, there are solutions to your tooth issues. Due to you having so many choices when it comes to restorative dentistry, you may not know which option is right for you. Here is an explanation of the differences between crowns and bridges.
Bridges
Bridges help you bridge the gap that losing one or more teeth in your mouth can cause. Bridges connect prosthetic teeth to either your natural teeth or your dental implants. Dentists can use bridges to restore the look of your teeth when you lose several teeth on one side of your jaw or directly across from each other. There are different types of bridges depending on where you have lost teeth. Bridges can also be removable or permanent. With traditional bridges, the ends of the bridge are cemented to your teeth. Some bridges are only cemented on one side, which is perfect if you only have healthy teeth on one side of the bridge. If you need to replace your front teeth, there's a bridge specifically designed for front teeth as well.
Crowns
Instead of replacing teeth that are completely missing, crowns cover teeth that are broken, chipped, weak, or cracked. Crowns are made to protect teeth. Dentists make crowns out of porcelain that covers a metal cap. Sometimes, crowns are made of composite material, which isn't as strong. If you have a weakened tooth, a crown could be used instead of pulling- or extracting- the tooth. Crowns can also be used to cover a tooth that is discolored due to illness, injury, or medication.
A dentist will be able to go over your teeth with you and discuss which type of restorative dentistry you need to restore your gorgeous smile.
