Are There Ways To Aid My Gums Through Diet?

About Gum Disease


Bacteria cause gum disease. These bacteria are helpful in digestion- in small doses. However, if you have a lot of bacteria in your mouth, they can infect your gums- especially if you are not brushing or flossing as often as you should. Gum disease can not only cause infected gums, but you can also be in danger of losing teeth as well.

How Can Diet Help My Gum Health?


There are several ways you can change your diet to help your gums. First, you need to be sure you are not consuming too much sugar or carbohydrates. That's because the bacteria present in your mouth love sugar, and sugar makes them reproduce more quickly. By lowering the amount of sugar you eat, you are reducing the amount of food available to the bacteria.

Also, you need to make sure you are drinking a lot of water. Water is beneficial to your entire body, and it is a great tool to use when you are fighting gum disease. Water encourages the production of saliva, which washes out bacteria through your digestive system.

Many vitamins and minerals also help with gum health. One of the most important vitamins in the fight against gum disease is vitamin C. Vitamin C does several great things for your gums. First, if you have a mild form of gum disease called gingivitis, vitamin C can help heal your gums.

Also, vitamin C is important to all of the soft tissues in your mouth, including your gums. The vitamin can guard against loose teeth due to gum disease as well. It helps to increase the circulation in your gums, which helps to keep them healthy. You can find vitamin C in citrus, leafy greens, and potatoes.

While you're at it, those leafy greens are a great source of vitamin A, which helps with healing as well as dry mouth. The more nutritious your diet is, the better your chances of fighting gum disease.
