The vast majority of adults lose teeth during their lifetimes. While some adults lose their teeth due to an injury or through an accident, the main reason people lose teeth in adulthood is due to tooth decay or gum disease. Over 90% of all adults have either tooth decay or gum disease, both of which are caused by the same bacteria. Here is some information about solutions when you lose teeth because of gum disease.
About Gum Disease
When you are diagnosed with gum disease, you need to know that there are three stages of the disease. Stage One is the least severe. You can cure this mild form of gum disease, called gingivitis, by brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist regularly. Stages Two and Three of gum disease are more serious. They are called periodontitis, and they can result in lost teeth as well as other issues.
What to Do if You Lose Teeth
If you have lost teeth due to gum disease, you need to know there are alternatives to tooth loss. If you have lost one tooth, you may want to opt for a dental implant. Implants are the closest thing to a natural tooth that is possible. An implant is a titanium screw that attaches to your jawbone through your gums. A prosthetic tooth sits on top of the screw.
If you have lost multiple teeth on one side of your mouth, or if the lost teeth sit directly adjacent to one another, you can get a bridge. Bridges can either be permanently cemented into your mouth or they can be removable. Bridges are attached or cemented to your natural teeth or in between two implants. You can also opt for partial, removable dentures.
What if you have lost all of your teeth? No worries. You can opt for full dentures or full dental implants. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, so be sure and check with a dentist for more information, as well as how you can keep your gums as healthy as possible.
