What Foods Should I Avoid After A Deep Gum Cleaning?

Posted on 2/2/2024 by Weo Admin
A pile of sugary foodsHave you had a deep gum cleaning lately, or are you anticipating one? If you have experienced a deep gum cleaning, or you are going to undergo one soon, you need to know how to care for your gums afterward. Here is information on deep gum cleaning before and aftercare.

What Is a Deep Gum Cleaning?

People with gum disease called periodontitis need deep gum cleaning. That's because their gums are separating from their teeth, which leaves pockets or spaces between their teeth and gums. These pockets can fill with food particles, bacteria, and even tooth particles, which can cause the disease to spread even further.

Deep gum cleaning allows the dentist to clean out those spaces, which helps to keep your gums as healthy as possible. A dentist uses tools such as lasers to clean off the tartar at and below your gumline. Tartar is actually a buildup of bacteria and food particles, and when it hardens, it can only be removed by a dentist.

Caring for Your Gums After a Deep Cleaning

After your gums are cleaned, there are some things you can do to take care of your gums. First, there are some foods you need to avoid for a few days. Avoid citrus, tomatoes, and other acidic foods. You also don't need to eat hard-to-chew foods, such as corn and steak. Don't consume sharp foods such as pretzels and chips and avoid popcorn because of the kernels.

You'll also want to take any medication prescribed for you by the dentist. Take over-the-counter medications for pain as well. You can also use icepacks if your mouth is sensitive. Are you worried about your deep gum cleaning? Be sure and ask the dentist about other instructions you should follow. You will soon be on your way to better dental health!
