The Use of Probiotics in Periodontal Disease Management

Posted on 3/15/2024 by Weo Admin
a close up of healthy gums and pearly teethBacterial overgrowth along the gums, also known as periodontitis or gum disease, is rather widespread. This bacteria results in swelling and potential damage to the tissues enclosing the teeth. As gum disease progresses, bone loss and eventual tooth loss can transpire. Thankfully, techniques to control and remedy gum disease exist, including an emerging method: probiotics.

Defining Probiotics

The advantages of probiotics for digestive health may be well known. However, probiotics could also assist oral health. They are live bacteria analogous to the beneficial organisms inherent in the mouth. Common strains stem from two varieties of microbes: lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. Analysts hypothesize probiotic germs might battle pernicious gum infection-inducing bacteria.

Probiotic Mechanisms for Gum Health

Experts theorize numerous mechanisms whereby probiotics may help gums: elevating natural immunity against germs, stopping harmful bacteria linkage to mouth surfaces, and minimizing inflammation using natural chemicals. The resulting reduced swelling shields tissues. While additional trials are warranted, initial probiotic studies also lower gum bleeding and pocket depth, benefiting post-deep cleaning recovery.

Latest Probiotic-Gum Disease Findings

The majority of investigations analyzing probiotics for oral health have been limited. Nonetheless, results seem promising, as certain probiotic species potentially lessen gum bleeding and pocket depth per a review. Additionally, a study showed that a specially designed probiotic lozenge healed gum tissue after intensive plaque removal procedures. Further large studies should cement these encouraging early results.

Are Probiotics Ready for Use in Treating Gum Disease?

Despite positive early signs, experts believe formally prescribing probiotic gum disease treatment remains premature pending more concrete confirmation of benefits as well as determining bacterial subtypes and dosages and universal safety. In the interim, probiotic foods like yogurt offer some profit. A nutritious, vegetable-rich diet may also nurture good mouth bacteria. Diligent oral hygiene and dental examinations continue to be critical for gum disease prevention and management.

Probiotics are an exciting new area of research for oral health. More studies may soon prove that probiotics can improve gum disease treatment. For now, be sure to brush and floss daily and see your dentist to catch any problems early.
