What Is Perio Therapy?

Posted on 4/15/2024 by Weo Admin
A 3d rendering of plaque and removal toolsScientifically known as the gingiva, our gums hold the teeth in place and protect the underneath supportive tissues. Unfortunately, our gums can get an infection that causes teeth to decay, harming your oral and overall health. This is where periodontal (perio) therapy stages itself to life. In this situation, your periodontist can recommend two types of procedures: surgical or non-surgical.

Why Perio Therapy?

Prevention of Gum Disease

Plaque and tartar buildup causes gum disease. Periodontal therapy removes plaque from the gum line and between teeth to prevent gum disease. This stops the growth of bacteria, which causes gum inflammation.

Preservation of Teeth

Healthy gums are essential for keeping teeth in place. Untreated gum disease can lead to the destruction of the supporting bone and tissues around the teeth. This ultimately results in tooth loss. Perio therapy helps preserve the integrity of the teeth by promoting gum health.

Treatment of Gum Disease

For individuals already suffering from gum disease, this therapy offers various treatment options to address the condition. These treatments may include scaling and root planing (deep cleaning), antibiotic therapy, and surgical interventions like gum grafting or pocket reduction surgery.

Enhancement of Aesthetic Appearance

Healthy gums contribute to a beautiful smile. Gum disease can cause symptoms such as swollen, red, and bleeding gums, detracting from the aesthetic appearance of your smile. Treatment helps improve the appearance of the gums.

Improvement of Overall Health

Research has shown a strong association between gum disease and systemic health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory illnesses. By maintaining good gum health through perio therapy, individuals can reduce their risk of developing these serious health issues.

Periodontal therapy plays a crucial role in restoring gum health, preventing tooth loss, and addressing the complications associated with gum disease. Whether through non-surgical deep cleaning methods or advanced surgical procedures, it is vital to seek timely treatment. Also, scheduling regular dental check-ups with our periodontist is essential in maintaining gum health.
