How Smoking Affects Gum Health

It Increases Plaque

The chemicals in tobacco smoke allow plaque to build up more quickly. Plaque is a film of bacteria that covers the teeth. Too much plaque causes gingivitis or gum inflammation. Smokers tend to have more plaque due to decreased saliva flow.

It Irritates Gum Tissues

The toxins in cigarette smoke irritate and inflame the soft gum tissues surrounding the teeth. This makes gums more sensitive and easier to infect. Smokers are more prone to red, swollen, tender gums that bleed when brushing.

It Weakens the Immune System

Smoking compromises the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight infections. Bacteria can more easily invade irritated gum tissue around teeth. Smokers are at greater risk of developing painful gum diseases.

It Worsens Periodontal Disease

Studies show smoking worsens periodontitis (gum disease), which damages the bones supporting teeth. Smokers have more bone loss around teeth and deeper infected gum pockets. Severe periodontitis can lead to loose teeth and tooth loss if left untreated.

It Delays Healing

After professional cleanings and gum surgeries, smokers take longer to heal than non-smokers. Their gums and bones heal slower due to impaired immunity and constricted blood vessels. Quick healing is important after periodontal procedures.

It Increases Oral Cancer Risk

Tobacco use significantly raises the risk of developing mouth cancer, throat cancer, and other oral cancers. The lips, tongue, and throat are constantly exposed to cancer-causing chemicals in smoke. Dental evaluations are essential to catch early signs of oral cancer.
