What You Need to Know About Reversing Gum Disease

It's caused by bacteria in plaque, a sticky film that builds up on your teeth every day.

If plaque isn't removed through regular brushing and flossing, it can harden into tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional.

Gum disease can affect anyone, but it's more common in adults. It can lead to several serious problems, including tooth loss, bone loss, and even heart disease.

However, the good news is that gum disease is preventable and treatable.

Different Stages of Gum Disease

Gum disease progresses through several stages.

•  Gingivitis: This is the earliest stage of gum disease. It's characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Gingivitis is usually painless, but it's important to see a dentist if you notice any of these symptoms.

•  Periodontitis: If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis. Periodontitis is a more serious form of gum disease that can damage the tissues and bones that support your teeth. This can lead to loose teeth and eventually tooth loss.

•  Advanced Periodontitis: This is the most severe stage of gum disease. In this stage, the supporting bone and tissue are significantly damaged, making it difficult to save the teeth.

Reversing Gum Disease

The good news is that gum disease can be reversed in most cases. The treatment will vary depending on the severity of the disease, but it often involves the following:

•  Professional cleaning: Your dentist or hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, both above and below the gum line. This is usually done with a deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing.

•  Medication: In some cases, your dentist may prescribe antibiotics to help fight the infection.

•  Surgery: In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to repair damaged tissues or restore lost bone.

Maintaining Oral Health

Once your gum disease has been treated, it's important to maintain good oral hygiene to prevent it from coming back. This includes:

•  Brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
•  Flossing daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth.
•  Seeing your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.
•  Using an anti-bacterial mouthwash.

The Importance of Early Detection

Early detection and treatment are essential for reversing gum disease and preventing serious complications. If you notice any signs of gum disease, such as red, swollen, or bleeding gums, see your dentist right away.

Restoration Dentistry

In some cases, gum disease can lead to tooth loss. If this happens, restoration dentistry can help restore your smile and your ability to chew and speak properly. There are several options available, including dental implants, bridges, and dentures. Your dentist can help you choose the best option for your needs.

Taking Control of Your Oral Health

Gum disease is a serious problem, but it's important to remember that it's preventable and treatable. By taking good care of your oral health, you can keep your gums healthy and your smile bright.

If you have any questions or concerns about gum disease, please talk to your dentist. They can provide you with the information and treatment you need to keep your mouth healthy.
