You may be experiencing gum recession, a common dental issue that can lead to other problems if left untreated.

What Causes Receding Gums?

Several factors can contribute to receding gums, including:

•  Gum disease (periodontitis): The most common cause, gum disease is a bacterial infection that attacks the tissues and bones supporting your teeth.

•  Aggressive tooth brushing: Brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can damage your gums and cause them to recede.

•  Tobacco use: Smoking and chewing tobacco decrease blood flow to the gums, making them more susceptible to disease and recession.

•  Misaligned bite: An improper bite can put uneven pressure on your gums, leading to recession.

•  Hormonal changes: Women may experience gum recession during pregnancy or menopause due to hormonal fluctuations.

How Are Receding Gums Treated?

Treatment for receding gums depends on the severity of the recession and the underlying cause. Here are some common approaches:

Non-Surgical Treatment

•  Improved oral hygiene: This is the first step in treating gum recession. Thorough brushing and flossing twice a day and regular dental cleanings remove plaque and bacteria, preventing further gum damage.

•  Antibiotics: Your periodontist may prescribe antibiotics, either topical or oral, to fight any existing infection in the gums.

•  Scaling and root planing: This deep cleaning procedure removes plaque and tartar from beneath the gum line and smooths the tooth root, making it less hospitable to bacteria.

Surgical Treatment

•  Gum grafting: This procedure takes tissue from the roof of your mouth or another source and grafts it onto the receded areas. This adds volume to your gums and covers exposed tooth roots.

•  Pocket reduction surgery: If gum pockets have formed, a periodontist can surgically shrink these pockets, allowing the gums to reattach to the teeth. This also makes it easier to keep the area clean.

•  Regenerative procedures: In advanced cases, special bone grafting materials can be used to regenerate lost bone and tissue around the teeth.
