Common Tools Used in the Treatment of Gum Disease

If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss and other serious health problems. The good news is that gum disease is preventable and treatable.

There are many different tools that dentists use to treat gum disease, depending on the severity of the condition. Here are some of the most common tools:

1. Periodontal Probes

These are thin, metal instruments that are used to measure the depth of the pockets between your teeth and gums. This information helps your dentist assess the severity of your gum disease and develop a treatment plan.

2. Scalers and Curettes

These are specialized instruments that are used to remove plaque and calculus (tartar) from below the gum line. Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure that is often the first step in treating gum disease.

3. Antibiotics

In some cases, your dentist may prescribe antibiotics to help control the infection. These may be taken orally or applied directly to the gums.

4. Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is a newer treatment option that uses lasers to kill bacteria and promote healing. It is often used in conjunction with scaling and root planing.

5. Surgery

In severe cases of gum disease, surgery may be necessary to remove diseased tissue and restore the health of your gums.

6. Oral Care Products

In addition to these professional treatments, there are several things you can do at home to help prevent and treat gum disease. These include:
•  Brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
•  Flossing daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth.
•  Using an antiseptic mouthwash to kill bacteria.
•  Eating a healthy diet and avoiding sugary drinks.
•  Seeing your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.

Restoration Dentistry

In some cases, gum disease can damage the bones supporting your teeth. If this happens, your dentist may recommend restoration dentistry procedures to rebuild the bone and restore the health of your mouth. These procedures may include bone grafts, dental implants, or guided tissue regeneration.

Conclusion

Gum disease is a serious condition, but it can be successfully treated with the right tools and techniques. By working together with your dentist, you can keep your gums healthy and your teeth strong. If you have any concerns about your oral health, please schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.
