Understanding Pocket Reduction Surgery

Posted on 4/15/2025 by Dr. Gopin
Have you ever heard your dentist or hygienist mention "pockets" around your teeth? While they might sound harmless, deep pockets can be a sign of gum disease, also known as periodontitis. If left untreated, periodontitis can damage the bone and tissues that support your teeth, leading to tooth loss.

One way to treat periodontitis and prevent further damage is through pocket reduction surgery. This procedure aims to reduce the depth of the pockets around your teeth, making it easier to clean them and prevent bacteria from accumulating.

What Happens During Pocket Reduction Surgery?

During pocket reduction surgery, your periodontist will numb the area around your teeth with local anesthesia. Then, they will make small incisions in your gums to lift them back and expose the roots of your teeth.

The periodontist will then clean the roots of your teeth, removing any plaque, tartar, and infected tissue. They may also reshape the bone around your teeth to create a smoother surface and reduce the depth of the pockets.

Finally, the periodontist will stitch the gums back into place, often using dissolvable stitches.

Benefits of Pocket Reduction Surgery

There are several benefits to pocket reduction surgery, including:
•  Improved oral hygiene: By reducing the depth of the pockets, it becomes easier to clean your teeth and remove plaque and bacteria. This helps to prevent further gum disease and tooth loss.
•  Reduced inflammation: Pocket reduction surgery can help to reduce inflammation in the gums, which can improve the overall health of your mouth.
•  Improved aesthetics: In some cases, pocket reduction surgery can also improve the appearance of your smile by reducing the amount of gum tissue visible around your teeth.
•  Preserving your teeth: By treating periodontitis and preventing further bone loss, pocket reduction surgery can help to preserve your natural teeth for a lifetime.

Recovery from Pocket Reduction Surgery

After pocket reduction surgery, you will likely experience some discomfort and swelling. Your periodontist will prescribe pain medication and provide you with instructions on how to care for your mouth during the healing process.

It is important to follow your periodontist's instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and prevent infection. You will likely need to eat soft foods for the first few days and avoid strenuous activity.

Most people recover from pocket reduction surgery within a week or two. However, it may take several months for your gums to fully heal. During this time, it is important to continue to see your periodontist for regular checkups and cleanings.

Is Pocket Reduction Surgery Right for You?

If you have periodontitis and deep pockets around your teeth, pocket reduction surgery may be a good option for you. Talk to your periodontist to discuss your individual needs and determine if this procedure is right for you.

By taking proactive steps to treat periodontitis, you can protect your oral health and keep your natural teeth for a lifetime.
