Dentures are used to replace teeth that have been damaged by tooth decay and gum disease, otherwise known as periodontitis. Dentures are usually used to replace lost teeth, or possible improve the aesthetics of damaged teeth in the mouth. Gum disease can cause a lot of other issues, including gum recession, which can lead to tooth loss. If you have receding gums, then it is important to address the gum recession before your dentures can be properly fitted.
Gum Disease Treatments
There are many kinds of treatments for gum disease. Non-surgical treatments can include a profession dental cleaning, scaling and root planing, or it can be customized to your needs. The surgical treatments for gum disease can include flap surgery/pocket reduction surgery, bone grafts, soft tissue grafts, guided tissue regeneration, and bone surgery. A common treatment for receding gums is a gingivoplasty, otherwise known as soft tissue recontouring. This procedure is when our periodontist removes tissues or straightens the gumline, making your gums more susceptible for appropriate denture fittings. Finally, there are also some medications that can be used to treat gum disease. They may reduce or eliminate the bacteria creating the periodontal disease.
The primary purpose of dentures is to replace lost or removed natural teeth. You can either get a full set of dentures, or a partial set of dentures, depending on the needs of your mouth. The dentures will be custom designed to fit your mouth, but for the best results the gumline should be healthy. A healthy gumline will help keep the dentures healthy longer.
Though gum disease may result in tooth loss, leading to dentures, it is important to make sure your gums are healthy before getting dentures.
