What are the white spots on my teeth?

What are the white spots on my teeth? The appearance of your teeth is important not only for your smile but also for your overall health. Poor-looking teeth can be a source of stress and depression for many people. It is therefore important to ensure that you do not encounter teeth problems. White spots on your teeth are an indication that your teeth are starting to decay. In dentistry, we call them white lesions, and they can be caused by several factors such as fluorosis which is overexposing your teeth to fluoride.

Causes of White Spots on Your Teeth

As already mentioned, fluoride can be a possible cause of the white spots. Even though there are numerous benefits of using fluoride, too much of it can harm your teeth causing your teeth to discolor. Swallowing toothpaste, fluoride supplements, and fluoridated water can be the sources of too much fluoride.
Enamel Hypoplasia is a condition characterized by a thinner enamel than usual. Risk factors include preterm births, teeth trauma, vitamin deficiencies, and hereditary factors. These can cause your teeth to be discolored and become susceptible to dental decay.

Demineralization is another common cause of white lesions on teeth. It leads to decalcification of the tooth enamel, which is caused by the build-up of plaque on the surface of the teeth. The major cause for this is poor dental hygiene habits, and it is also usual in people who wear braces. If treated quickly, the white spots can be reversed.
