How A Root Canal Treatment Can Save Your Tooth

How A Root Canal Treatment Can Save Your ToothIf you are experiencing severe pain while biting or chewing, it doesn't mean that you have to get a tooth extraction. If the damage isn't very severe, there is still a chance of saving the tooth. A root canal is a procedure that involves removing infected pulp as well as nerves in the tooth's root. Once the pulp is removed, a dentist cleans and shapes the inner part of the root canal before filling and sealing the space. The dentist then places a crown on your tooth to help protect it and restore its function.

When do You Need a Root Canal?

A root canal is necessary when the tooth's pulp is inflamed or infected. The pulp is the soft tissue found inside the root canal. Inflammation or infection may be caused by deep decay, cracking, and chipping in the tooth or repeated dental procedures on a tooth. An injury to the tooth may also damage the pulp even if there are no visible signs of chips and cracks. Left untreated, pulp inflammation or infection can cause pain and even lead to an abscess.

Not All Teeth Can be Treated with Root Canal

Although most teeth may be treated with a root canal procedure, sometimes, this treatment may not work. Occasionally, you may have root canals that are not accessible or the root is extremely fractured. Also, if the tooth lacks adequate bone support, root canal treatment may not be suitable. If your tooth cannot be restored with root canal treatment, a periodontist may recommend a different treatment, often an extraction or surgery.

If your tooth is painful, come to our periodontic office for evaluation. Our periodontist will determine the most appropriate treatment to save the tooth. If severely damaged, you may have it extracted before you receive dental implants.
