Preparation Procedures for Periodontics

Posted on 8/22/2022 by Evan
Preparation Procedures for PeriodonticsPeriodontics is the name of the specialty that focuses on diagnosing and treating gum disease. Treatment involves scaling, root planing, and surgical procedures for a patient to maintain the new space between their teeth and gums after thoroughly cleaning them. The procedures involved with periodontics treatment are extensive and require a high level of skill. However, these treatments require some preparation procedures for the best results. Here are the most common preparation procedures for periodontic treatments:

Bleaching

Bleaching is a dental procedure that can be performed either at a dentist's office or at home. The dentist does it, but if you have discoloration on your teeth, you may want to try it on your own before starting treatment with a dentist.

Tooth bleaching uses an oxidizing agent (bleach) to lighten the color of your teeth. The agent removes stains from tooth surfaces and makes them more reflective. The process also strengthens enamel, helping prevent future decay.

Deep Cleaning and Scaling or known as PerioScaling

This procedure helps remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from under the gum line. It also removes excess calculus (tartar) around teeth that cannot be removed by brushing and flossing alone. A deep cleaning may also be referred to as scaling or root planning, depending on the type of instrument used during the procedure.

Medications

Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory are often prescribed to help prevent infections and control pain during treatment. Your dentist may also prescribe medication to relieve swelling or inflammation after surgery. It's important to follow your dentist's recommendations for taking these medications and any other instructions that a doctor may give.

Steroids

Steroids reduce swelling and inflammation by blocking the production of inflammatory chemicals in the body during an injury or infection. They also treat certain conditions such as asthma, arthritis, and eczema. Steroids may be taken orally or applied directly to the gums with a cotton swab or gauze pad until they wear off (usually within 24 hours).
