If you struggle with these conditions, our team at Bruce Gopin, DDS, MS through our many high-quality treatment options.

One of our team’s effective and highly successful treatments is gingival contouring. Gingival contouring can improve the appearance of your gumline and make it easier for you to properly clean your teeth and gums.

What Is Gingival Contouring?

Gingival contouring is also referred to as gum contouring. It is a surgical procedure used by our team to reform and reshape your gumline. Gum contouring is utilized for patients who experience excess gum tissue or a receding gumline. The procedure will vary slightly depending on whether our team is adding new tissue or removing excess tissue.

Gingival contouring can generally be completed in a single session. If our team is conducting this procedure to remove excess tissue, they will start by administering a local anesthetic. They will then utilize a laser or scalpel and begin removing the excess gum tissue. The goal of this procedure is to expose a larger portion of your teeth and eliminate tissue that may be accumulating plaque and bacteria.

Our team may need to suture the area to hold the gums in place during the healing process. The healing process will take several weeks. However, our team will likely only recommend that you limit your food and drink selection for a few days. The first few days after the procedure is when most patients experience minor discomfort and sensitivity.

If you are suffering from a receding gumline, our team will again start the procedure by administering an anesthetic. Once you are numb, they will then begin grafting new tissue to your gumline to reshape and restore it. This tissue can be harvested from several sources but is most often harvested from the roof of your mouth.

Do I Need Gingival Contouring?

To determine if you need gingival contouring, you simply need to schedule a consultation with our team. During this visit, our professionals will discuss any symptoms you are experiencing and provide guidance on good oral hygiene practices. They will also conduct an oral examination which will likely involve taking measurements of your gumline. If it is determined that you are in need of gingival contouring, our team will schedule the procedure.

Gingival contouring will make it easier for you to maintain good oral hygiene by removing excess material that can trap bacteria and plaque. If you have a receding gumline, gum contouring will restore the strength and stability of your teeth by repairing the gums that support them. A receding gumline can cause increased sensitivity because receded gums will not adequately protect the roots of your teeth. Gingival contouring also provides cosmetic benefits by giving you a more natural-looking smile.

If you think that you may be a candidate for gingival contouring, our team at Bruce Gopin, DDS, MS can help. You can reach us by calling our office at 915-213-3455.
